The Sr Scientist will be a member of the Department of Cardiometabolic Disorders within Amgen Research located in Thousand Oaks, CA. The position will include conceptualizing and proposing therapeutic target programs with a sound and compelling scientific rationale and conducting in vivo and in vitro preclinical Cardiometabolic disease studies with a focus on PAH, vascular disease and/or heart failure and their use in the pharmacological assessment of drug candidates.

In addition, the Sr Scientist will be encouraged to demonstrate critical thinking, exhibit excellent communication skills and prosecute programs with a high degree of integrity. They will be involved in the identification and validation of potential targets based on their knowledge of Cardiovascular and metabolic disease. The successful candidate will also support existing drug programs and provide excellent in vivo data by directly generating data themselves and with assistance from associates.

Responsibilities include:

  • Critical and original thinking and drive to deliver innovative medicines for patients
  • Study design, data collection, analysis, and interpretation in preclinical models of Cardiometabolic disease
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills that enable effective team interactions and communication of key data to all key stakeholders in a succinct, balanced and compelling manner.
  • The candidate must demonstrate or quickly develop a strong capability of operating in a matrix work environment seeking input and support from other stakeholders and show appropriate use of resources. The ability to collaborate cross-functionally is critical.
  • Exceptional in vivo technical skills, capable of generating highly reproducible data of outstanding quality
  • Careful and precise data documentation, keeping accurate records of raw data and analysis in electronic databases for IP and data integrity purposes
  • Basic knowledge of statistical methods applied in a consistent and rigorous manner to all data sets generated.
  • Draft manuscripts, posters and presentations for external peer-review publication and conference attendance
  • Produce reports and/or presentations of study plans and results
  • Remaining aware of historical and current research in cardiometabolic disease and the clinical findings of therapeutic agents in clinical development

Basic Qualifications

Doctorate degree

OR

Master’s degree and 4 years of scientific experience

OR

Bachelor's degree and 6 years of scientific experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD and 3+ years postdoc experience
  • Industry experience preferred but not required
  • Direct hands-on experience with in vivo preclinical models of cardiovascular disease
  • Sound knowledge of integrated physiology, with proven experience in the field of hormonal and cellular control of cardiovascular risk factors

Knowledge of genomic analysis is a plus

Written and oral presentation of their research in the form of impactful research papers, conference posters and oral presentations
