Our Neuromodulation business is an area of expertise for Abbott. Our location in Plano, TX currently has an opportunity for a Staff Firmware Design Engineer. The Staff Engineer works independently to design new best in class implantable and external neuromodulation devices, for the treatment of chronic pain and neurological disorders. The Staff Engineer designs products and development tools in a fast-paced cross-functional design environment, and is current on new technologies and design practices. This includes providing instruction, oversight, and mentoring to other design engineers and pushing for excellence in themselves and the team.
WHAT YOU’LL DO
Function as the central firmware/software development expert within the organization
Function as the BLE development expert within the organization
Architect optimal firmware design for a whole product using advanced engineering and scientific principles
Lead firmware engineering team through demonstrated technical excellence and implementation of engineering best practices
Work with multi-disciplinary engineering teams to solves difficult technical issues with a methodical, data-driven approach
Create novel design solutions that expand the business’s intellectual property
Lead technical reviews and design reviews or acts as an independent reviewer
Develop requirements, development plans, test plans and risk management solutions. Provide technical solutions for developing BLE, Cybersecurity and low power firmware •
Develop team through mentorship, training, and adoption of development best practices
Build and maintain positive and cooperative relationships internally and externally
Maintains expert knowledge in current and novel technologies
Engage teams across Abbott to utilize the latest technology and expertise across the business
Engage with industry regulators (FDA, BSI, etc.) to explain novel designs or technical analysis in support of device submissions
Own firmware design from requirements through commercial launch
Develop/utilize models, characterization testing, analysis methods, and statistics to optimize designs
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE YOU’LL BRING
Required
Bachelor’s degree in electrical, computer engineering or an equivalent combination of education and work experience.
Minimum 10 years of relevant engineering experience in the design and analysis of real-time embedded firmware designs with low power, mixed signal processors
Experience with design and implementation of BLE designs and cybersecurity/data transfer best practices
Experience implementing BLE 4.2 attribute protocol and familiar with Apple and Google BLE stacks
Experience developing central and peripheral BLE applications
Experience developing firmware requirements, development and test plans
Experience with software development for medical devices and IEC 62304 compliance
Demonstrated expert knowledge of sound design principles and practices
Experience leading firmware teams through full development lifecycle
Demonstrated knowledge of risk management techniques
Demonstrated knowledge of characterization testing, root cause analysis and utilization of benchtop measurement equipment and test setups
Strong verbal and written communication skills
Preferred
Demonstrated knowledge of medical device design controls (21 CFR Part 820) and project management
Master’s degree in computer engineering or related field
Experience with digital signal processing, data analysis and/or machine learning
Experience planning project deliveries, milestones, and schedules and leading sub-teams in the delivery of firmware tasks
Experience working in Agile teams
