Our location in Plano, TX currently has an opportunity within R&D for a Staff Human Factors Engineer. The Human Factors Engineer uses in-depth knowledge of human psychology and cognitive science to work with patients, clinicians, and design engineers to develop usable, safe, and highly effective new products and upgrades to existing products for our neuromodulation systems platform. The Human Factors Engineer is responsible for identifying and defining user characteristics for design, analyzing user tasks, performing heuristic reviews and use error assessments, planning and executing formative and summative usability testing, and communicating human factors principles throughout the organization.
WHAT YOU WILL DO
Develop Use Specifications and Task Analysis to support development of Customer, System, and Product Requirements.
Assess and document use errors and advise the team on usability risks and mitigations.
Develop, plan, execute, analyze, and document experimental studies, and draw relevant conclusions.
Develop Formative and Summative Usability Validation Protocols & Reports. Conduct usability studies and design iteration assessments of products both internally and with external key opinion leaders.
Apply psychological and design principles to user interfaces to provide recommendations for improvements to usability or mitigate user risk.
Tailor human factors efforts on projects through the application of human factors regulations and guidelines.
Plan and conduct worldwide customer, competitive, and software industry research to identify and prioritize usability improvement possibilities and solutions.
Provide human factors and usability input and oversight on programs.
Prioritize tasks by distinguishing urgent from important tasks and assesses cost/benefit trade-offs.
Develop understanding of the scientific, technical, medical, and clinical aspects of Abbott neuromodulation devices and features and the disease states they aim to treat.
Support human factors evaluation of new or enhanced products. Identify potential product enhancements and new product ideas by applying an analytical approach to understanding user needs.
Maintain a detailed understanding of the developing human factors environment (e.g. evaluation methods, evolving regulatory landscapes, etc.).
Maintain a detailed understanding of Abbott, FDA 21 CFR Part 820, and ISO regulations.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Required
Bachelor’s degree in Human Factors, Psychology, Applied Cognition, Human Computer Interaction, Biomedical Engineering or related field.
8+ years of relevant human factors/usability engineering or design experience.
Experience planning and executing usability or user studies.
Experience assessing and measuring human behavior and performance.
Experience designing evaluations using a variety of research methods, including experiments, surveys, and observational studies.
Experience analyzing behavioral data and summarizing the results in a report or paper.
Experience working on or leading a team of researchers, scientists, or engineers.
Self-starter needing minimal supervision. Strong verbal and written communications with the ability to effectively communicate at multiple levels within the organization.
Experience interfacing with a variety of management levels and effectively presenting technical information.
Preferred
Advanced degree with specialization in Human Factors.
Knowledge of human factors standards and guidelines (e.g., IEC 62366-1, IEC 60601-1-6, HE: 75).
Experience moderating formative and summative usability studies.
Experience providing human factors input for regulated medical device submissions.
Fluent in surgical terminology and sound knowledge of anatomy and surgical techniques.
Technical or medical experience in neuromodulation.
