Staff Process Engineer – Operations, IDS (Integrated Diagnostic Systems)
GENERAL FUNCTION:
Reporting to the Senior Manager, Plant Engineering, the Staff Process Engineer is responsible for leading and managing Automated Manufacturing Equipment projects for IDS facilities in North America, the Caribbean, Europe and Asia. Projects include selection and development of best-in-class equipment for manufacturing medical and industrial reagent and media products. As a subject matter expert in Process Engineering, Staff Process Engineer provides technical guidance and support to other functional groups to meet BD business objectives.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
KNOWLEDGE & PROBLEM SOLVING:
- Works on unusually complex technical problems providing solutions that meet safety, quality, cost and schedule requirements.
- Ability to deconstruct complex problems, organize/detail the various functions, and translate those functions into clear and unambiguous technical specifications.
- Develops new manufacturing processes and scales up established processes in the areas of media formulation, liquid dispense, mixing, system Clean In Place (CIP), and product sterilization.
- Familiarity with design, fabrication and validation of aseptic and hygienic terminally sterilized manufacturing equipment and processes.
- Generates process documentation such as equipment specifications, operations procedures, technical drawings, process flow diagrams (PFDs), and piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs).
- Utilizes structured design and development processes (i.e. Design for Six Sigma, Design for Manufacturing/Assembly) for development of robust products and manufacturing processes. Applies Continuous Improvement (CI) and Six Sigma principles and techniques to achieve predictable product flow meeting Operation’s safety, quality, delivery and cost objectives.
LIASON:
- Manages suppliers of custom automated equipment for manufacturing aseptic and terminally sterilized reagent and media products.
- Interfaces with Operations, Quality, Procurement and Legal groups in the development of manufacturing, molding and packaging equipment.
- Interfaces with peers in other BD divisions to exchange ideas and experiences while developing “best in class” manufacturing solutions.
PROJECT MANAGEMENT:
- Manages complex projects to design, prototype, build and commercialize manufacturing process equipment. Initiates, plans, executes, monitors, controls, and brings these projects to closure.
- Provides engineering leadership and guidance to engineering associates on projects.
- Position may require management of direct reports.
MANUFACTURING PROCESS TECHNOLOGY:
- Demonstrated technical accomplishments and application of expert technical skills in relevant manufacturing process technologies, process and product innovation and development.
- Acts as a sounding board, consultant or mentor for other members of the department/business in assessing technical issues and developing solutions.
- Applies engineering principles and interprets experimentation results to determine appropriate course of action. Organizes and executes technology sensing, research and development applicable to process automation, equipment, and manufacturing processes.
LEADERSHIP:
- Anticipates consequences of actions and/or decisions. Makes decisions that are in the best interest of the company.
- Demonstrates initiative and innovation in actions/ideas, with constant vision toward successful execution of assignment(s), including project management.
- Decisions and recommendations typically have a significant impact on critical organizational objectives associated with safety, quality, delivery and/or cost of manufactured product.
OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Presents technical material fluently to peers and leadership.
- Provides project status updates and reports to management on a timely basis.
- Follows division policies and guidelines.
- Other duties as assigned and applicable.
EDUCATION:
- BS in Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical or similar Engineering required.
- Relevant, specialized certifications or advanced engineering degree preferred.
- Professional engineering (PE) desirable.
TRAVEL:
- Domestic and International travel to BD and vendor facilities is required.
- Trips will range from 1 day to multiple weeks.
- Total time on travel is estimated at 25%-40%
EXPERIENCE:
- Minimum of 8 years relevant experience or a combination of equivalent education and experience in applicable products and/or automated manufacturing equipment, with preferred background in the high volume production of medical devices, in-vitro diagnostic products, and pharmaceutical products.
- Demonstrated expertise in ANSI/ISA-88 batch process control.
- Experience in organizing and leading multi-functional teams with demonstrated capability managing complex, high capital cost projects across multiple sites world wide.
- Experience in generating various forms of documentation such as system specifications, procedures, drawings (Solidworks and/or Autocad preferred), PFDs, and P&IDs.
