Our location in Woodridge, MN, currently has an opportunity for a Staff Research and Development Engineer. The Staff R&D Engineer will use multidisciplinary engineering knowledge to design and develop innovative new products in the dynamic structural heart space where Abbott is a leading provider of solutions.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

  • Plan, coordinate, and execute activity in support of project goals

  • Establish requirements and specifications

  • Run empirical and experimental analysis

  • Comply with U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations, other regulatory requirements, company policies, operating procedures, processes, and task assignments

  • Maintain positive and cooperative communications and collaboration with all levels of employees, customers, contractors, and vendors

  • Identify and mitigate project risks

  • Maintain knowledge of the developing clinical environment (i.e. current treatment methods, evolving clinical needs etc.)

  • Investigate issues and define root causes in complex systems

  • Work with outside consultants, vendors, and the medical community

  • Function as the central firmware/software development expert within the organization

  • Architect optimal firmware design for a whole product using advanced engineering and scientific principles

  • Develop requirements, development plans, test plans and risk management solutions. Provide technical solutions for developing BLE, cybersecurity and low power firmware.

  • May manage and supervise technicians, co-ops/interns, and entry level engineers

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE, YOU’LL BRING

Required

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering (Computer, Electrical, Computer Systems, Systems, or Software), Computer Science.

  • 8+ years, related work experience, primarily in R&D engineering

Preferred

  • Strong verbal and written communications with ability to effectively communicate at multiple levels in the organization

  • Ability to work within cross-functional teams as an individual contributor in a fast-paced, changing environment

  • Knowledge and understanding of a variety of engineering disciplines, theories and concepts, to support development of innovative approaches to problem solving

  • Project management skills

  • Experience designing and testing medical devices preferred

  • Experience in the design and analysis of real-time embedded firmware designs with low power, mixed signal processors

  • Experience with design and implementation of BLE designs and cybersecurity/data transfer best practices

  • Experience with software development for medical devices and IEC 62304 compliance

  • Experience leading firmware teams through full development lifecycle

  • Experience in motor controls preferred
