Strategic Planning & Operations Director - R&D Strategy and Operations

Amgen is seeking a Strategic Planning and Operations Senior Director to advance strategic planning and lead critical capability initiatives for the Research and Development Strategy and Operations (RDSO) organization. The Director reports to the Executive Director, R&D Strategy and Operations and Head of R&D Operations and will support the Vice President of Strategy and Operations.  

R&D Strategy and Operations partners with R&D leadership to enable R&D to develop strategies, progress innovative initiatives, inform performance, make fast decisions and to have a culture that continuously improves. This role is 50% Strategic Planning and 50% Transformation, and is expected to lead and progress key R&D strategic and transformational initiatives.

The Director will partner with Function VP, senior leadership team, and key stakeholders to drive R&D and functional strategic execution, and progress goals and initiatives.

In this role the Director will:

  • Work with RDSO leaders to stand up an R&D Strategy and Operations function with the supporting capabilities including Strategic Planning, Performance Management, Continuous Improvement, communication and engagement, among other things.
  • Support the RDSO VP in effectively organizing team interaction to achieve the functional objectives
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with cross functional stakeholders; proactively communicating, seeking advice, and facilitating critical business decisions.
  • Gather, analyze, and synthesize cross-functional information across a variety of sources to turn unstructured business issues and requests into appropriate action plans and projects that result in high quality, meaningful and actionable deliverables.
  • Manage stakeholders by clearly communicating status, issues, implications and recommendations. 
  • Ensure RDSO project success ( as assigned), by managing risks, removing roadblocks, driving innovative thinking, maintaining fair process, escalating issues and delivering high quality results.
  • Adapt to a rapidly changing, fast-moving and often ambiguous environment
  • Lead transformation, and continuous initiatives as needed

This position is currently located in our corporate headquarters, located in Thousand Oaks, CA, but alternative locations will be considered for the right candidate.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Doctorate degree and 4 years of Scientific and/or Operations and/or business experience OR
  • Master’s degree and 7 years of Scientific and/or Operations and/or business experience OR
  • Bachelor’s degree and 9 years of Scientific and/or Operations and/or business experience

Preferred Skills:

  • Advanced degree or strong demonstration of equivalent combination of relevant educational and professional training experience in leading cross-functional teams
  • 4+ years' of experience in Biotechnology / Pharmaceutical industry, particularly in Research and Development
  • 7+ years' of experience in a cross-functional business operations or project management role
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including ability to storyline and prepare executive-level discussion documents
  • Strong technical skills leveraging digital tools
  • Strong written, verbal and digital communication skills
  • Excellent conceptual problem-solving skills with demonstrated ability to bring structure to vaguely defined problems, pragmatically scope problem solving approach, and manage execution
  • Strong quantitative and qualitative analytic skills
  • Strong leadership skills with a demonstrated ability to influence different styles
  • Drug Development knowledge with basic to strong understanding of activities within Research, Preclinical and Clinical Development, Medical and Regulatory
  • Independent, motivated, team member with experience in a matrix environment
