Imaging Target-engagement/Pharmacodynamic Biomarker Expert

The Integrated Bioanalysis (iBA) group within the Clinical Pharmacology and Quantitative Pharmacology department at AstraZeneca seeks an experienced scientist to develop imaging-based target-engagement and pharmacodynamic biomarker assays to support therapeutic product programs at the Senior or Associate Principal Scientist level, commensurate with experience. The ideal candidate will have extensive laboratory experience in use of imaging technologies (IHC, immunofluorescence, confocal microscopy) to develop biomarker assays, and in-depth understanding of the drug-development process, and expertise in cell biology, biochemistry, or disease biology (e.g. cardiovascular, cancer, pulmonary/respiratory, neurology or inflammation). The role is based in South San Francisco, California.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
Develop assays to quantify target-engagement &/or pharmacodynamic activities of AZ therapeutic products that interact with cell-bound molecules
Serve as the bioanalytical assay representative or lead scientist for one or more therapeutic programs at the pre-clinical or clinical development stages
Interface with other functional area representatives (clinical pharmacologists, toxicologists, translational medicine representative, clinical scientists) to deliver on program goals
Contribute to engagement efforts with Commercial Research Organizations (CRO) in assay transfer, validation and implementation of bioanalytical & biomarker assays
Educational Requirements and Qualifications
PhD in relevant field (cell biology, immunology, cancer biology) and post-doctoral experience in related area
Experience
1-7 years of experience in biological studies or biomarker identification in biopharmaceutical setting
Experience in developing imaging-based assays to quantify target-engagement &/or pharmacodynamic activities of therapeutic products
Broad-based understanding and expertise in microscopy techniques including, but not limited to, immunofluorescence, IHC, confocal protocols
Cell biology expertise and familiarity with protocols for cell-line generation, culture, and in-vitro primary cell model systems
Understanding of assay development/qualification process for therapeutic molecules
Experience with flow cytometry (imaging or traditional) or ELISPOT is preferred
Special Skills/abilities
Ability to manage multiple complex programs and delivery timelines concurrently
Ability to work independently in a highly-matrixed organization to deliver on goals
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
