Job Description

DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL AND ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING 

Technical Officer (Ref. 20080603-E) 

Duties 

The appointee will be responsible for all technical tasks and administrative duties for the Structural Engineering Research Laboratory. He/She will be required to:

(a) take up a supervisory role and allocate job duties to junior technical staff in the Structural Engineering Unit;

(b) supervise laboratory sessions and assist in the fabrication, setup, instrumentation and testing of research projects, which are carried out in or outside the laboratories/workshops of the Department;

(c) provide technical support and operate 10000kN Multi-purpose Testing System, loading frames, actuators, data acquisition systems, LVDTs, loadcells, inclinometers, overhead crane, forklift truck and scaffolding, etc.;

(d) coordinate teaching and research support activities among the laboratories/workshops of the Department;

(e) provide assistance to academics in charge of laboratories in management and development of laboratories/workshops;

(f) provide support to departmental events, e.g. University Information Day and Orientation Day; and

(g) perform any other duties as assigned by the Head of Department or his/her delegates.

Qualifications: 

Applicants should:

(a) have a higher Diploma or a higher Certificate, preferably a degree, in Civil & Structural Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or other related disciplines;

(b) have eight years’ relevant post-qualification experience, preferably with experience in administration/management of workshops or laboratories in tertiary institutions;

(c) have a good command of both written and spoken English and Chinese, with fluency in Putonghua; and

(d) have strong analytical skills, and good interpersonal and communication skills.

Preference will be given to those with a valid driving licence of class 2 or above.

Remuneration and Conditions of Service 

A highly competitive remuneration package will be offered. Initial appointment will be made on a fixed-term gratuity-bearing contract. Re-engagement thereafter is subject to mutual agreement. Applicants should state their current and expected salary in the application.
