Job Description
Job Title: Temporary Lecturer in Computer Science (Teaching Focused)
Role Purpose
Travelling to China for block teaching, you will be expected to conduct high-quality, innovative teaching and administrative duties at the Shenyang University of Technology, China (short name: SUT), on the modules of the BSc Information Technology course of University of Derby, UK (short name: UoD).
You will ensure the very best learning experience for the students, whilst supporting UoD and SUT to enhance their international reputation, and you will support the continual development of a positive, student-centric, and inclusive environment. Recruitment and training will be the joint responsibility of HandKey and University of Derby, who will monitor the adherence to the quality standards expected.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
Teaching
To undertake teaching duties as may be reasonably required by the UoD Head of the School of Computing (or persons to whom responsibility may be delegated).
To play an active role in the development & delivery of teaching in China in person. This includes preparing courses for delivery, delivery of lectures, as well as providing student support via tutorials, seminars, labs and electronic feedback.
To provide project support for undergraduate and/or postgraduate students.
To undertake academic duties (e.g. setting examination papers, assessment verification, marking, moderation, invigilation and pastoral support of students, create post module reflective evaluations) required to sustain the delivery of high-quality teaching.
To support and comply with the UoD’s teaching quality assurance standards and procedures, including the provision of such information as may be required by SUT.
To maintain a broad knowledge of up-to-date research and scholarship in relevant fields to ensure that teaching meets the standards expected within an international research-led University.
Internal and External Relationships
Collaborate with UoD and SUT, other schools and administrative units of these Universities. Develop and use any industrial or other external contacts to support our teaching and other graduate outcomes.
Seek to disseminate good teaching practices through university networks and conferences.
Planning and Organising
Plan and organise own work in relation to the activities described above.
Manage your own time within the allocation given for tasks and responsibilities.
Qualifications, Knowledge and Experience
Essential
Degree (completed with First), MSc (Distinction), or enrolled on PhD in relevant area*
Academic Teaching Qualification or commitment to gain a category of HEA Fellowship*
Evidence of undergraduate teaching experience including lecturing, supervision of projects and experience of using e-learning technologies*
Experience of working within the UK QAA Quality Code for Higher Education (or other country with world-leading reputation for quality) in providing excellent undergraduate degree courses and ensuring that all students receive a high-quality academic experience*
Experience of leading and being responsible for the success of a module
Experience of being a personal tutor for undergraduate or postgraduate students.
Desirable
PhD in a relevant area
Evidence of ability/potential to contribute to SUT’s and the UoD’s current curriculum
Experience of successfully designing and leading a programme or course.
Skills, Abilities and Competencies
Essential
Ability to teach and supervise undergraduate and PG students in the general area of Computing*
High English proficiency level, sufficient to undertake research, teaching and admin activities utilising English Language materials, and to communicate effectively with staff and students.*
Proven ability or potential to initiate work independently and as part of a team.
Demonstrate flexibility and a willingness to enthusiastically take on challenges.
Proven ability or potential to teach undergraduate and postgraduate students in lectures, tutorials, and seminars, and to supervise postgraduate students.
Ability or potential to help develop curricula.
Ability or potential to engage in outreach activities.
Good written* and oral communication skills, along with presentation and training skills.
Good interpersonal skills.
