Thesis (Bachelor/Master): Path-planning for autonomous mobile robots in industrial applications
SIEMENSMuenchenUpdate time: September 13,2022
Job Description
Mode of Employment: Limited Use your knowledge as a springboard. Traditionally, autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) move around industrial shopfloors by following manually specified routes. These routes add beneficial structure to the process (e.g., drive on the right side). By following routes, the behavior of AMRs becomes more predictable, and the fleet is less prone to congestion. However, as production cycles become increasingly short, manufacturing environments must also be reorganized more frequently. As a result, some areas of the factory floor become poorly structured, making manual predefinition of a lane network impractical. One approach that works well for unstructured environments described above is a free-space planner. Free-space planners may however generate paths that seem unnatural or unintuitive (cutting across lanes in the effort to reduce travelled distance). Change the future with us. The goal of the thesis is to develop a planner that in a holistic and generic way combines the prior information given by manually crafted routes (adding structure and foreseeable behaviors) and the benefits of a free navigation planner. Your tasks: Exploration of existing architectures and planning algorithms Development of a new planning algorithm for semi-structured environments with a lane-network prior Implementation, evaluation, and demonstration of new methods in simulation and on our hardware testbed What you need to make real what matters. You are an excellent student in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Physics or a related field You have good analytical skills Basic knowledge on the algorithmic foundations of path planning / graph algorithms is required Good expertise in C++ is a must Experience with ROS is welcome Make your mark in our exciting world at Siemens. www.siemens.de if you wish to find out more about Siemens before applying.
