Job Title: Unix Consultant
Location:TRIL GTC Chennai

Function / Team -

Scope of Services: UNIX admin responsible for providing SME support for UNIX Infrastructure. He will be a primarily focused be an escalation point across the team for resolving technical issues. The incumbent will be expected to drive the project of various nature i.e. Service Impact Assessment, Service Improvement, RCA, Guidance of new service, technical assistance to other team members… etc. L3 technical experts resolve issues that are typically subtle. L3 engineers participate in management, prioritization, minor enhancements, break-fix activities, problem management, stability analysis, etc.

Service Operations: These support leaders have specific, deep understanding and expertise in one or two technology platforms (for example, RHEL, CentOS, OpenStack & AWS). L3 engineers are proactive in nature, identifying problems in advance and looking for continuous service improvement opportunities. L3 engineers may have root or administrator access to basic systems.

Support includes the following:

  • Ensuring system hardware integrity through proactive measures
  • Updates of operating systems when required

Implementation of all upgrades and patches when required

Responsible for testing, and documenting new configurations of UNIX services.

Change Management: Ensure new solutions delivered by projects are fit for purpose in service and delivers the right solution to the business from a capability and cost perspective that is aligned to the AZ architecture roadmaps. The role will ensure tight governance on proposed architecture changes, upgrades and process modifications.

Candidate Focus & Challenge

TCO: Responsible for the definition of the architecture for each of the component services to deliver value for money to the business and to ensure alignment to their business requirements. Regularly explore opportunities for technology consolidation, process improvements to ensure that greater efficiencies are gained in both technology and processes.

Documentation: Work with suppliers to review and ensure Technical Reference materials are current and accurate for the service teams to provide a robust service. Take ownership of all governance-related documents – standards, policies etc. to ensure standardization and simplification are gained at all levels.

Support/Service: Provides support to Service Managers and Suppliers during the resolution of support issues that would require significant change to the existing architecture.

Capacity Management: Responsible for ensuring that capacity is managed effectively through working with the Capacity Manager. Takes ownership of how UNIX servers compute capacity is monitored, measured and tracked and reviews the process on a regular basis for service improvements.

Technology governance: As it relates to the UNIX technology stack, oversees the following functions enforcing technology governance:

Incident & Problem management

  • Change management – Major changes
  • License management
  • Service Improvements as it relates to technology
  • Infrastructure lifecycle management.

Candidate Knowledge, Skills & Experience

  • 3+ years of Operational experience in UNIX administration
  • Operational experience in the UNIX domain with respect to managing Incidents, Problems, Changes and capacity management aspects
  • Experience and ability to work in shifts on rotational basis covering Americas, EMEA and ASIA PAC regions 24*7.
  • Excellent communication skills (written, oral and presentation) - Spoken English.

Candidate Knowledge, Skills & Experience

  • 3+ years of Operational experience in UNIX administration
  • Operational experience in the UNIX domain with respect to managing Incidents, Problems, Changes and capacity management aspects
  • Experience and ability to work in shifts on rotational basis covering Americas, EMEA and ASIA PAC regions 24*7
  • Excellent communication skills (written, oral and presentation) - Spoken English.

Technical Skills

  • Extensive Hands-on experience in the following in two UNIX technologies.
  • RHEL 5,6 & 7
  • Solaris 9,10,11
  • AIX 6, 7
  • HPC Computing, Pacemaker, RHEL/HACMP/VCS Cluster
  • OpenStack, Azure and AWS
  • Python programming experience
  • Ansible playbook creation & execution
  • Jenkins jobs configuration & scheduling
  • Extensive systems administration experience in various UNIX flavours – LINUX, AIX, Solaris and their associated hardware platform.
  • Experience of managing large patch roll-outs, Operating System upgrades and migrations.
  • Experience of setting up a multi-node cluster in pressing timescales.
  • Management of authentication systems, like LDAP, VAS.
  • Good knowledge in Scripting.
  • Troubleshoot performance issues.
  • Competent in working clustering and Cloud products from various technology vendors.
  • SAN storage management on UNIX platforms.
  • Virtualization of Docker, Containerization and VMware.
  • Good knowledge in implement and streamline activities of redesign technology and process.

Activities

  • Deliver solutions and ideas that improve the stability and security of UNIX environment.
  • Take ownership of escalated technical issues, and lead them to closure by applying the effective solution
  • Provide and maintain the overall operational quality, service delivery and security compliance within UNIX team.
  • Generate and drive Continuous Improvement initiatives aimed at improving business performance.
  • Provide front end support for Production issues.
  • Mentor and train team members to help provide support independently.
  • Be the excellency in UNIX engineering and assist in the evaluation of new products, solutions, and technologies.
  • Liaise with UNIX technology to find solutions for complex issues.
  • Strong process management expertise, the experience of ITIL or any other service delivery framework.

Key Deliverables

  • Achieve defined KPI’s meeting the SLA.
  • Faster resolution of incidents in the UNIX environment.
  • Apply the problem management process to find the RCA, and contain the outages.
  • Assist in documentation of procedures, Whitepaper and process.
  • Timely remediation of audit observations to ensure compliance.
  • To improve and maintain the availability and health of UNIX estate.
  • Trend analysis of historical incidents, and identification of patterns.
  • Automation of frequent BAU activities.
  • Identify the opportunities to bring in efficiency through work-outs.
