Job Description Summary

The VP/GM Research Solutions will oversee and lead the Research Solutions business. The Research Solutions business incorporates Research Instruments, Research Reagents, Single cell Multiomics and Informatics platforms with revenues over $500m.

A key focus for this role is to engage and provide strategic, operational, and financial direction to the platform teams. He/she will work closely with the Platform leaders who in turn work with the Regions to develop business plans for the developed and emerging markets to achieve short-term and long-term sales, profit and growth objectives.

This VP/GM will drive innovative solutions through the business and build its organizational capabilities.

This leader will be a member of the BD Biosciences WW Leadership Team (WWLT). This position will report directly to the WW President, BD Biosciences.

Job Description

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develops the strategic and annual operating plan in conjunction with the Regions to drive profitable growth across the key market segment areas. Provides strategic and operational input to the business strategy, P&L analysis, and Portfolio Reviews.
  • Co-develops, with the WW President and LT, the business strategy, and works closely with the VP Global Marketing in the development and implementation of the worldwide marketing strategies for the overall Research Solutions business including the marketing approaches to research market segments and new spaces.
  • Works seamlessly across the businesses and functions to drive strategy, growth and innovation through the development of solutions tailored to the customer needs. Assures that global customer requirements are prioritized and represented to the product development teams.
  • Drives a fact-based and data-driven culture and work system in both innovation/New Product Development and go to market strategies
  • Regularly, meets with customers, key opinion leaders, marketing staff, and sales associates on a worldwide, multilevel basis.
  • Responsible for overall positioning of products in the market place, and product life cycle management.
  • Champions a focus on continuous improvement and quality.
  • Builds organizational capability and creates & implements work systems, organization structure and a continuous improvement approach for the Research Solutions organization.  Actively leads and manages the direct and matrix teams and devotes appropriate time to employee development, performance management, and talent planning.  Communicates what is expected of associates and provides regular feedback.
  • Develops and manages departmental expense budgets.
  • Contributes to the evaluation of potential mergers, acquisitions, and business agreements.
  • Focuses on creating a culture of customer-centricity and innovation at BD.
  • Participates in projects and initiatives as assigned and represents the Company at industry events, advisory boards, etc. as appropriate.

The ideal candidate will have strong strategic and execution capabilities given the breadth of the role. He/she should have experiences and capabilities to apply strong business leadership across all functions, and possess both the technical/scientific background and customer focused orientation to be successful in the role. He/she will have strong business and financial acumen, P&L experience, and have run several high impact cross functional global programs. He/she should be strategically agile and alert to changes in the global healthcare environment, the business and customer needs and have the ability to guide the team to think beyond the current priorities and be able to articulate new opportunities. The candidate should be able to influence and lead cross functionally to gain alignment and drive change.

The candidate should have strong experience in talent acquisition and leadership development as a line leader, and passion for coaching and developing our next generation of functional and business leadership for future succession. Cross industry experiences, including work experiences in Life Sciences and regulated medical device environments, are preferred.

EDUCATION:           

MBA in Marketing or Business with a BS in a related scientific discipline is strongly preferred.  Fifteen (15) years of related marketing and/or sales experience, including 10 years of management experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. 

EXPERIENCE:

  • Work experience in a life sciences, clinical diagnostics, or medical devices company is required.  Experience in immunology and molecular biology is desirable.  A minimum of 8-10 years experience in healthcare or diagnostics leadership roles is required.
  • Prior general management/cross-functional leadership experience and direct P&L experience is strongly desired.
  • Background in the marketing of systems for medical research or clinical diagnostics applications desired.
  • Strong leadership skills and demonstrated success in building and strengthening teams.
  • International work experience is preferred.
  • Ability to build team aligned with the needs of the current and future organization.
  • Breadth of functional experiences is required.
