Reporting to the President of the University, the Vice President (Research and Development) will assist the President in developing and leading the strategic direction of the University, which encompasses the strategic development of research, knowledge transfer and graduate studies. He/she will also be accountable for the development of internationalisation and student affairs via the oversight of the Global Affairs Office and Student Affairs Office. The appointee will:

• plan, develop and oversee the University’s research infrastructure, policies and strategies, including continuous benchmark and enhancement of the University’s research performance, and other research related initiatives launched by the University Grants Committee, Research Grants Council and other bodies;
• promote an innovative research culture, high quality scholarship, and nurture focused areas of research excellence (including research centres), with emphasis on application and integration of research with teaching and learning at all levels, and the transfer of knowledge both locally and internationally to make academic, curriculum, policy and social impact;
• establish strong local, regional and international networks and explore new collaborative projects with overseas partners in order to expand the global network and profile of the University; and
• provide visionary leadership to student affairs for the provision of a supportive environment beneficial to the all-round development of students, and advise strategically on the formulation of plans and measures of student affairs in response to the changing demands and challenges.

Applicants should possess strong academic qualifications; a proven record of substantial contributions and outstanding academic achievements in research and scholarship of international standing; extensive leadership experience in a senior academic position; strong interpersonal, presentation and communication skills; a sound knowledge of local higher education sector and Asian education context; an ability to communicate effectively in English and preferably Chinese (Cantonese and/or Putonghua); and excellent judgement and decision-making abilities, including strong problem identification and problem resolution skills.
