Job Description

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: (include the following)

Drives the preparation of course content and objectives, syllabi, lesson plans, student manuals, and development of customer training aids.

Works with factory marketing, sales marketing and Centers of Excellence personnel to develop customer training courses for new products.

Works with factory marketing, sales marketing and Centers of Excellence personnel to update and improve existing customer training courses.

Creating or participating in the creation of a schedule for training development and presentation.

Creating or assisting in creation of yearly course calendars and course descriptions. Identifying training gaps in the customer training organization and developing and executing plans to close the gaps Determining appropriate training methods for topics (e.g., live instructor, computer-based, video, read and sign, on-the-job, etc.) Creating or assisting in the creation of instructor-led, online and blended learning.

Provide support and consultation to sales personnel and customers in the North American Marketplace.

Assist in developing and implementation of plans to improve Centers of Excellence capabilities while working towards corporate revenue and customer allegiance goals.

All other duties as assigned by Customer Training Manager and/or Supervisor.

Decision Making Authority

  • Purchase airline tickets up to $1000 per incident using the Thermo Scientific travel policy.
  • Stay at hotels up to $130 per night (excluding tax).
  • Charge meals up to $45 per day.
  • Initiate customer complaints as needed

Specific Scope Data

  • Responsible for customer training of the installed customer base (Americas) on relevant scientific instruments.
  • Drive material creation for in-house, on-site training and online learning.

Minimum Education and/or Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in a science education related field. MS or PhD in chemistry, instructional design or a related field preferred.
  • Previous technical training or similar experience required. Candidate must be able to communicate effectively with a wide variety of people and have strong interpersonal skills.
  • Prior experience in project management related to training and e-Learning
  • Prior experience maintaining and troubleshooting Learning Management Systems (LMS)
  • Prior experience authoring, testing, and implementing e-Learning content

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Necessary to Perform Essential Functions

  • Good communication (verbal and written) skills.
  • Basic understanding of learning theory and design (ADDIE, cognitive load, etc.).
  • Good understanding of LMS administration (Docebo or similar)
  • Good understanding of e-Learning authoring software (Captivate, Articulate or similar)
  • Basic understanding of video creation and editing (Camtasia, Adobe Premiere, or similar)
  • Basic understanding of audio creation and editing (Audacity or similar)
  • Detailed understanding of Windows based software, networking and PC hardware.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple high priority activities (training, travel, and other group needs) and establish realistic schedules to meet requirements.
  • Ability to work independently, and as part of a group, to accomplish individual and team objectives.
  • Knows and can use statistical principals necessary to analyze service data.
  • Ability to travel 50%
  • Strong presentation skills and abilities
  • Knowledge of adult learning techniques and education programs
  • Experience training groups of individuals related to technical course content

Specific job duties that require the physical demands itemized above include traveling (driving and flying up to 50%) to a customer site, talking to customers on the phone and in person, reading schematics and other manufacturing documentation, reading and understanding scientific papers and journals, expense reports, and other documentation.

Work at a Thermo laboratory site containing supported products. (Hands on access required for difficult problems). While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals and risk of electrical shock. The employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, risk of radiation, and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Position may require occasional pager duty, after hour’s duty, and flexible hours in order to complete tasks. Position may also require extensive U.S. and foreign travel.
