Production Operations Engineer/Sr. Engineer
Oath IncTaibeiUpdate time: August 13,2019
Job Description
It takes powerful technology to connect our brands and partners with an audience of 1 billion. Nearly half of Verizon Media employees are building the code and platforms that help us achieve that. Whether you’re looking to write mobile app code, engineer the servers behind our massive ad tech stacks, or develop algorithms to help us process 4 trillion data points a day, what you do here will have a huge impact on our business—and the world. Want in? As Verizon’s media unit, our brands like Yahoo, TechCrunch and HuffPost help people stay informed and entertained, communicate and transact, while creating new ways for advertisers and partners to connect. With technologies like XR, AI, machine-learning, and 5G, we’re transforming media for tomorrow, too. We're creators and coders, dreamers and doers creating what's next in content, advertising and technology.

The MEC (Multi-Access Edge Compute) Engineering group is a group of passionate Engineers, Developers & Production Engineers, in the Infrastructure as a Service Engineering organization focusing primarily on OpenStack and its use in Verizon Media & Verizon data centers and edge locations. We work closely with the internal Verizon Media OpenStack group to help provide world class Infrastructure to both Verizon Media and Verizon. OpenStack is an important component of Verizon Media’s cloud platform and Verizon Media has a growing presence in the community and in contributions.

This role is with the Production Engineering (PE) team within the Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) group. You will be working on building and deploying industry leading Openstack infrastructure and building tools and monitoring to ensure high availability to our customers. We are looking for motivated, self-driven engineers with a clear understanding of operational practices and standards who are able to clearly communicate with customers and engineering partners.

Responsibilities

  • Deploy high availability infrastructure across Verizon Media and Verizon datacenters.

  • Work within a fast-paced group delivering key components of IaaS infrastructure.

  • Develop quality tools to ensure monitoring and alerting visibility to support our customer base.

  • Work with Agile methodologies to deliver platform services and features.

What We Want You To Be

  • Think big, and think efficient. You'll be responsible for thousands of servers, so you'll need to be accomplished at automating time-consuming tasks.

  • Be passionate about reliability. At our scale, even small outages can cost millions. Every service we build needs to withstand datacenter failure or other catastrophic events without downtime.

  • Be a good "partner". Production Engineers should work closely, and cooperatively, with other teams. Don't be afraid to check in code! Know how to take ownership without being territorial. Communicate clearly & deliver on your promises.

  • Learn fast and "own" your education. We provide plenty of training, but we expect you to be a useful contributor quickly, and to seek out any knowledge you're missing.

  • Be interested in the technology. New innovations are happening in this space every day. You'll be helping to make many of them a reality!

  • Have a long-term vision. What will your services look like 2-5 years from now? What new technologies will help them get there? What aging technologies should we move away from?

  • Value autonomy. We meet frequently to talk about engineering standards, but beyond that, you'll call the shots, you'll meet with stakeholders, and you'll be accountable for the smooth operation of your assigned properties.

  • Have broad technical knowledge. Since you’ll often work independently, you’ll need a variety of technical skills to be effective.

Required Qualifications

  • Master's or Bachelor's degree in Computer Science (or related field) or equivalent experience.

  • Experience in operational reliability, security, authorization, automation, optimization, monitoring, configuration management, debugging and troubleshooting in Unix/Linux environment, and high availability solutions

  • Strong on scripting languages (python, bash, Go, ruby, etc) with emphasis on writing modular, scalable code

  • Experience with relational databases (mysql, postgresql) and/or messaging technologies (RabbitMQ, zeromq)

  • Experience collaborating with technical teams in remote and international locations using excellent verbal and written communication skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in the use of open source tools and systems; comfortable with open source community and collaborative merit-based work where all ideas are heard and the best ones are implemented

  • Experience with design, implementation and operation of large scale distributed systems

  • Experience with CI/CD systems and deployment tooling, like Ansible and Chef

  • Experience with monitoring and log analysis systems, like Splunk

  • A sense of humor
