Job Description:

Tesla is looking for a highly motivated engineer to create manufacturing equipment and processes for our cutting edge Batteries. The Battery is one of the most complex and challenging components of the electric car. As a result, Battery development is at the heart of our company. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to building a world class manufacturing facility in the Shanghai area. Tesla is a demanding and fast-paced environment where you will work on a critical subsystem of an incredibly exciting product.

Roles and Responsibilities:

In addition to developing manufacturing equipment and processes, Manufacturing Engineers work with cross-functional teams throughout the entire product lifecycle. You will work closely with Design Engineering, Quality and Production to take Battery design changes and new Battery designs from initial concept through prototype development and into full production.

Process Development and Implementation

  • Development of new manufacturing processes
  • Development of wire bonding parameters and programs
  • Creation of detailed Manufacturing Instructions to define new processes and document new equipment operation
  • Training of technicians and line operators on manufacturing processes
  • Modeling of line capacity and line balancing
  • Performance of DOE for process characterization and improvements
  • Deployment of statistical control for key processes
  • Performance of PFMEA and RCA

Skills and Experience:

  • Proficiency designing mechanical equipment, fixturing and tooling in CAD (SolidWorks preferred, Catia is also a plus)
  • Proficiency creating detailed drawings from solid models for various fabrication techniques (CNC/manual machining, welding, sheet metal forming)
  • Experience with ultrasonic welding is required
  • Experience designing automated manufacturing equipment
  • Experience introducing new equipment and new processes into a production environment
  • Experience creating process documentation
  • Experience with design for manufacturability
  • Experience with precision adhesive dispensing is a plus
  • Experience with surface analysis is a plus
  • Experience with optical and electron microscopy is a plus
  • Experience with statistical packages (R, S, JMP) is a plus
  • Experience transitioning products from prototype to production is a plus
  • Knowledgeable about production quality metrics is a plus
  • Able to work under pressure while managing competing demands and tight deadlines
  • Exemplary verbal and written communication skills
  • Well organized with meticulous attention to detail
  • Mastery of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio

Qualifications:

  • BS/MS Engineering (Mechanical or equivalent preferred)
  • 2 to 5+ years of experience as a hands-on mechanical/manufacturing/design engineer working on mechanical and/or electromechanical systems.
