This position resides within Corning® Gorilla® Glass Commercial Technology Lab in Shenzhen. The candidate will be a key player in leading cover glass mechanical reliability testing and failure mode analysis on consumer electronics. The individual will engage closely with internal cross-functional teams to support next-generation innovation product and processes, interact with customers to assist design-in of Corning product and strengthen insight for various materials and customer design optimization. We are looking for individual who can deliver following objectives:

  • Deliver success in engaging product value proposition characterization in early stage innovation with sound approach and strong fundamental in materials engineering and mechanics of materials
  • Provide reliability testing and characterization support, analyze technical data and own responsibility to prepare technical materials for customer communication
  • Conduct fracture and failure mode analysis on a variety of mechanically-advantaged thin glass products and programs

Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • Understand technical requirements and manage testing plan internally to gain fundamental knowledge to address technical challenges at customer in new product evaluation and adoption stage
  • Work with product development, manufacturing and commercial to understand and translate needs into reliability requirements
  • Perform sample preparation in aspect of mechanical testing & failure analysis
  • Conduct fractographic analysis of cover glass and identify modes of failure
  • Prepare reports of analysis and mechanical characterizations
  • Recommend product design and process changes to improve reliability

Key Qualifications

Education and Experience:
3 - 10 years of work experience after completion of M.S. or PhD - preferably in Engineering Mechanics, Materials Science & Engineering or Mechanical Engineering

Travel Requirements: up to 25%, mainly in Asia region


Required Skills
  • Strong fundamental of mechanics of materials and materials engineering with experience in mechanical behaviors and glass/ceramics characterization
  • Familiarity with reliability engineering, statistical analyses and materials damage mechanisms
  • Demonstrated ability to independently analyze test results and communicate effectively
  • Craft new experiments and improve existing ones

Desired Skills
  • Background or past experience in glass and ceramics
  • Knowledge of statistical analysis and reliability tools
  • Understanding on touch technologies and related cover glass fabrication/processes
  • Ability to define and deconstruct the problem, develop knowledge/methods/testing, interpret results, report and present to customers including recommendations and next steps
  • Ability to communicate technical contents in English and Chinese fluently
