Job Openings

The Centre for Higher Education Research (hereinafter “the Centre”) of the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech), China (hereinafter “the University”) was founded in June 2015. As both a teaching and research unit and a supporting entity of International Centre of Higher Education Innovation of UNESCO, the Centre aims at carrying out academic research and practical activities in the field of higher education.

The teaching and research areas of the Centre include: 1) Professional general education; 2) School-based research; 3) ICT theory and application; 4) Curriculum development and planning; 5) Talent development.

To promote the development of pedagogy, the Centre now recruits scholars worldwide working in the following pedagogical fields: Education Technology, Higher Education Pedagogy, Curriculum and Teaching Theory, and Comparative Education. Applications are invited for Professor/Associate Professor/Assistant Professor (2-4 positions), Postdoctoral Fellow (2-4 positions), Teaching and Research Assistant (2-4 positions), and Visiting Scholar (2-4 positions). Applicants are expected to agree with the mission and vision of the Southern University of Science and Technology and abide by Higher Education Law of the People's Republic of China and other relevant laws and regulations. Details of the positions are as follows.


Professor/Associate Professor/Assistant Professor (2-4 positions)

1. Qualifications

a) Applicants should be able to demonstrate research excellence in pedagogy with world-leading research achievements;

b) Applicants should have a vice-senior or above professional title in pedagogy or a PhD degree in pedagogy;

c) Preference will be given to applicants who have experience in studying abroad and extensive working experience at overseas well-known universities. Proficiency in working, researching, and writing in English will be preferred;

d) Preference will be given to applicants who are familiar with and involved in "studies on the application of ICT in higher education" and those who are outstanding in research fields such as MOOC, mobile learning, blended learning, etc.;

e) Preference will be given to "Chang Jiang Scholars", tenured professors from overseas first-class universities, or other applicants of the similar level.

2. Position and Remuneration

a) Salary and Benefits: The University offers internationally competitive salary and benefits, including the “five insurances and one housing fund” according to the national policy (endowment insurance, medical insurance, unemployment insurance, employment injury insurance, maternity insurance, and Housing Provident Fund), corporate pension, supplementary health insurance, etc.;

b) Housing: The University will provide spacious and comfortable accommodation;

c) Qualified appointees can apply for the Shenzhen government's "Peacock Program", in which C-class talents will receive tax-free subsidies of no less than RMB 1,600,000, and B-class talents will receive tax-free subsidies of no less than RMB 2,000,000;

d) The school helps to solve the spouse's employment and children's school enrolment issues. Children of faculty members can enrol at SUSTech Kindergarten and SUSTech Experimental Primary School;

e) It is the priority of the University to provide any other necessary resources that the discipline needs;

f) The University offers certain rewards to appointees who succeed in leading the discipline to the accreditation of doctoral program or to be included in the National Key Disciplines during the appointment period.

3. Duties

a) Appointees should endeavour to promote the pedagogical discipline development of the Centre, aiming at building it into one of the most influential academic platforms in the country;

b) During the appointment period, Professor should publish no less than two academic articles on the university designated B-class-above periodicals or overseas SSCI periodicals and no less than two academic articles on C-Class periodicals each year, and host and complete two national research projects or three provincial and ministerial projects. Overfulfilment will be rewarded in accordance with the provisions of the University (the primary or corresponding author’s institution should be the Southern University of Science and Technology);

c) During the appointment period, Associate Professors should publish no less than two academic articles on the university designated B-class-above periodicals or overseas SSCI periodicals and no less than one academic article on C-Class periodicals each year, and host and complete one national research project or two provincial and ministerial projects. Overfulfilment will be rewarded in accordance with the provisions of the University (the primary or corresponding author’s institution should be the Southern University of Science and Technology);

d) During the appointment period, Assistant Professors should publish no less than one academic article on the university designated B-class-above periodicals or overseas SSCI periodicals and no less than one academic article on C-Class periodicals each year, and host and complete one national research project or one provincial and ministerial project. Overfulfillment will be rewarded in accordance with the provisions of the University (the primary or corresponding author’s institution should be the Southern University of Science and Technology).


Postdoctoral Fellow (2-4 positions)

1. Qualifications

a) Applicants should have a PhD degree awarded in recent five years in institutions ranking no lower than 200 in the USNews, ARWU, THE, and QS lists and subjects ranking no lower than 50;

b) Applicants should have published more than one article as the primary author on professional English periodicals in recent three years;

c) Strong skills in independent analysis, problem solving, and communication and coordination;

d) Good English reading, listening, writing, speaking abilities and computer skills.

2. Remuneration and Benefits

In accordance with "Regulations on SUSTech Postdoctoral Fellows" and relevant regulations of the Shenzhen government, the annual salary will be no less than RMB 220,000 (including RMB 120,000 (after tax) municipal subsidies each year) and full-time faculty and staff benefits will be provided. Outstanding applicants can apply for the Presidential Postdoctoral Fellowship with an annual salary of RMB 300,000. Qualified Appointees can also apply for the Shenzhen government's high-level personnel program, Peacock Program, etc.

3. Duties

Appointees should accomplish the following tasks.

a) To publish no less than one academic article on overseas SSCI periodicals or no less than two academic articles on the university designated B-class-above or C-Class periodicals. Overfulfillment will be rewarded in accordance with the provisions of the University (the primary or corresponding author’s institution should be the Southern University of Science and Technology);

b) To complete research projects at the Centre for Higher Education Research diligently and strive to promote the academic reputation and social influence of the pedagogical discipline at the Southern University of Science and Technology.


Teaching and Research Assistant (2-4 positions)

1. Qualifications

a) Applicants should have a master's degree. Preference will be given to those who are in the fields of education technology, higher education, comparative education, etc.;

b) Applicants should have good English listening, speaking, reading, and writing abilities. Preference will be given to those with overseas study or visit experience;

c) Applicants should have good communication and coordination skills;

d) Applicants should be interested in doing research in higher education, education technology, comparative education, international organizations, and other fields.

2. Remuneration and Benefits

Term of appointment: one year (renewable annually). Salary and benefits are in accordance with relevant regulations at the Southern University of Science and Technology. Basic social insurance will be provided. More details are available during interview.

3. Duties

a) Conduct academic research;

b) Organize conferences;

c) Collect documents and materials;

d) Participate in translation, collation, and publication work at the Centre;

e) Fulfil other tasks appointed by the Centre.


Visiting Scholar (2-4 positions)

1. Requirements

Applicants should be interested in collaborating with the Centre for Higher Education Research of the Southern University of Science and Technology to undertake a certain amount of scientific research and teaching tasks. The requirements are:

a) Possession of a vice-senior or above professional title in pedagogy or a PhD degree in pedagogy;

b) Stable and distinctive research interests in the discipline and proven record of excellent academic research;

c) Proficiency in working, researching, and writing in English.

2. Remuneration and Benefits

a) The University offers living allowance regularly according to working hours, specific standards will be commensurate with the workload;

b) Housing: The University provides housing for visiting scholars from other cities, and rents are determined in accordance with relevant regulations.

3. Management

a) The University and the visiting scholar will sign the "Agreement of

Visiting Scholars of the Southern University of Science and Technology" (see annex);

b) The information of the personnel, salary, and administrative relations of the visiting scholar is kept at the home institution. In principle, when the visit period ends, the visiting scholar should return to the home institution; but it is also possible to consider faculty position at the University upon mutual selection;

c) The visit scholar is expected to submit work summary one week before the end of the visit period;

d) All the visiting scholar's achievements during the visit period, including but not limited to articles, monographs, awards, etc., should be shared with the home institution; while the University should be the primary author/participant of the achievements.
