About the role

Gap Inc. is seeking a Legal Counsel to join its Global Legal Department and Shanghai-based legal team to support the company’s growing business in Greater China (including mainland of China, Hong Kong and Taiwan). This position primarily handles legal support in traditional retail leasing, new business partnership/distribution models, store operational issues and dispute, pricing & marketing and other allocated legal areas to support business priorities & growth in Greater China.

What you'll do

  • Advise on, handle and manage a variety of complex and high value contract across all relevant aspects for the Greater China store growth, including new stores opening and existing stores operating, such as drafting, reviewing and negotiating retail leases, lease termination, renewal, store construction/design /maintenanceemodel and other real estate related contracts.
  • Manage real estate operational issues, claims and disputes arising from store lease implementation, including attendance at hearings and on settlement negotiations, as required.
  • Provide practical and strategic legal advice for business partner on new developing business models (e.g. distribution and consignment partnership), such as structuring the partnership with the third party, identifying legal issues and providing practical solutions, contract drafting and negotiation.
  • Provide practical legal advice on marketing campaign, pricing, promotion, and other marking related matter.
  • Work with and manage outside counsel as appropriate and within budgetary guidelines to ensure appropriate, effective and cost-efficient use of services.
  • Other responsibilities as determined by managers to support various business priorities.

Who you are

  • Law degree from a reputable university in China.
  • Nationwide Lawyer Qualification Certificate (passed China Bar).
  • 5-10 years of law firm and/or corporate legal department experience.
  • Experience in retail, real estate, commercial law or corporate law.
  • Experience with western companies/culture preferred.
  • Demonstrated strong ability to analyze issues, assess legal risk and balance legal and business objectives in a corporate legal environment.
  • Ability to conceptualize and articulate pragmatic/creative legal and business solutions to complex legal and business challenges.
  • Strong interpersonal and team building skills.
  • Ability to work independently and cross-functionally in a matrixed structure requiring collaboration with business partners and legal personnel in San Francisco.
  • Ability and desire to work in a fast-paced and challenging environment, prioritizing and juggling multiple matters.
  • Bilingual (fluent) in verbal and written English and Mandarin.
