INFORMATION FOR APPLICANTS

The Joint Course Program

This Joint Course Program is located at Changchun No. 2 Experimental Middle School (High School). Changchun No. 2 Experimental High School was established in 1963, and is one of the elite “provincial model high schools”. The school was designated as the “international school” for the children of foreign experts working in Jilin Province.

The Program is designed to take advantage of the strengths of both Chinese and American high school education, to absorb the essentialities of both Chinese and American cultures, and to integrate the advanced components of Chinese and American educational systems through the development of a comprehensive curriculum.

Who are we looking for?

The school is looking for experienced teachers who will come to work in Changchun and join enthusiastically in supporting the development of our Program by offering excellent teaching in English.

The position will suit someone who has some experience teaching those whose native language is not English. It also offers the chance to join the Program in its early stages and to be part of the team that establishes it and makes it successful. The school is expanding rapidly and at the same time we want to increase the number of subjects we offer to the students.

Applications are especially welcomed from candidates who are able to teach English as well as other subjects.

Working at Changchun No. 2 Experimental High School

The salary offered by the school is significantly more than is needed to live comfortably in Changchun.

Contracts are normally for ten or twelve months and are renewable by mutual consent. At the end of each contract period a gratuity equivalent to two months’ salary is payable, subject to satisfactory appraisal.

The school provides bilingual assistance to help with the obtaining of a work permit and residential visa, opening a local bank account and other administrative requirements. The people at the school are very friendly and welcoming, and occasional social events and trips are planned for the visiting staff.

The students are hard working, respectful and well behaved. The biggest challenge is to get them to think and work independently, since the teaching methods used in the Joint Course Program are very different from those that students have been used to in their Chinese education.

Living in Changchun

Changchun (simplified Chinese: 长春; pinyin: Chángchūn) is the capital and largest city of Jilin province, located in the northeast of the People's Republic of China. As the capital of Jilin Province, it is the second largest city in Northeast China and the political, economic and cultural center of the province. It is administered as a sub-provincial city with a population of about 7.5 million under its jurisdiction, including counties and county-level cities.

Changchun lies in the middle portion of the Northeast China Plain, covering a total area of 20,571 square kilometers (about 8,012 square miles). The city is situated at a moderate elevation, ranging from 250 metres to 350 metres within its administrative region.

Changchun has a four-season, humid continental climate. Its January mean temperature is about −15.1 °C (4.8 °F), and July averages 27 °C (80.6 °F). Snow is usually light during the winter, and annual rainfall is heavily concentrated from June to August. A typical year will see upwards of 2,600 hours of sunshine, and a frost-free period of 140 to 150 days.

Changchun is an important transportation and communications hub. In China, Changchun is known by several names that highlight the special charms of this city:

• Spring City of the Northland: In Chinese, “Changchun” means “long spring”. With its mild climate, Changchun lives up to its namesake, and has been honored with the title of the Spring City of the Northland.
• Forest City: Despite the city’s reputation as an industrial powerhouse, in Changchun, woods and city interweave in a unique blend of nature and modernity. With nearly a third of land cover populated by greenery, Changchun allows travellers and citizens alike to enjoy a breath of real fresh air.
• Breadbasket: Supported by a mild, favorable climate and plenty of sunshine, Changchun teems with corn and soybean crops, securing its reputation as a major agricultural center in Northern China.
• City of Automobiles: Changchun is the cradle of Chinese automobile industry. Home of China’s largest vehicle producer and birthplace of the first automobile entirely made in China, Changchun is also known as “China’s Cincinnati”. With an entire section devoted to the automotive industry, the largest auto wholesale center in China and the annual Changchun International Automobile Fair, Changchun is a real City of Automobiles.
• City of Films: The pioneering Changchun Film Studio is often praised as the cradle of Chinese film industry. Over dozens of years, they have produced many excellent domestic films and have garnered a reputation of great acclaim both at home and abroad. The city also hosts the biannual Changchun Film Festival. Film has been an intermediary of sorts for the city: people outside Changchun have learned about this city through the films it has produced.

It is undeniable that Changchun is also a good destination for travel outside of business. The natural beauty of Changchun lies in its forests and lakes. Visitors can enjoy the breathtaking scenery of Nan Hu Park (South Lake Park) or Jing Yue Tan National Forest Park. They can explore Changchun’s history in the vestiges left behind from the colonial period, such as Last Emperor's Palace, Badabu. In addition, Changchun Film Studio and Changchun Movie City provide a glimpse into the work that goes behind the production of movies in China.

After dark, visitors can enjoy Changchun’s nightlife, which comes to life in various kinds of pubs, coffee bars, teahouses and other amusement centers: the city has its own distinctive flavor that has to be experienced in person.
