Position Overview

The Norwood Motor plant is seeking a Lean Manufacturing Engineer with highly developed problem-solving skills and the ability to work efficiently and independently. This position will primarily support the Motor Assembly area. Responsibilities include identifying & assisting with the elimination of safety concerns, detecting & mitigating quality issues, and recognizing productivity inefficiencies, then improving the methods and procedures. The successful individual will work closely with multiple departments including Environmental Health & Safety, Quality, Engineering, and Production, creating a partnership between the departments.

Responsibilities

The Lean Manufacturing Engineer will be primarily responsible for the development and implementation of complex performance improvement initiatives, such as:

  • Lead manufacturing process improvement projects to evaluate existing processes to ensure effective operations, specifically targeting the ability to produce world-class motor assemblies using lean manufacturing principles
  • Actively participates in the design phase of products to ensure Design-for-Manufacturing principles are incorporated and lean manufacturing methods can be utilized.
  • Provides solutions to complex manufacturing process problems with limited direction, working in a cross functional environment
  • Identify manufacturing issues (design/process/component) and drive resolution by leading cross-functional or project teams.
  • Lead complex planning of equipment layout, workflow, and accident prevention measures to maintain optimum and safe utilization of plant resources.
  • Lead and support strategic projects to bring new manufacturing capabilities into the facility through new capital equipment or modernization of existing equipment.
  • Prepare standardized work instructions, workflow layouts, and material storage configurations.
  • Coordinates necessary process changes (through standardization, improvement, simplification, discontinuance, or other methods) and assist in implementing solutions
Required Knowledge/Skills, Education, and Experience
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Quality Engineering, Industrial Engineering or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Typically, 5-8 years of successful experience in related field and successful demonstration of key responsibilities and knowledge as presented above.
  • Excellent leadership and communication skills
  • Considerable experience utilizing problem solving tools & quality assurance methodologies including Plan-Do-Check-Act (A3), 8D, Kaizen, Lean Cell Design, Error-Proofing, 5-Why, Ishikawa, etc.
  • Firm project management skills, including developing project plans, timelines / schedules, budgets, proposed layouts, resource requirements, etc.
  • Ability to lead / interact with teams to obtain consensus in developing processes
  • Work closely with shop floor personnel to troubleshoot issues (manufacturing process, tooling, etc.) as they arise
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
Preferred Knowledge/Skills, Education, and Experience
  • Manufacturing time study skills and/or knowledge of predetermined time standard systems
  • Green Belt/Black Belt LEAN certification or Six Sigma certification
  • Value Stream mapping
  • Experienced user of SAP and TeamCenter
