About Resolve Foundation

Resolve is one of Hong Kong’s newest non-profit organizations, founded in 2017 to provide a dynamic platform to empower future community leaders, particularly from marginalized and underrepresented groups, with the skills, network and resources for them to know, understand, and act upon their rights for the benefit of the communities they represent and foster a more inclusive Hong Kong. 

 

We provide a signature Social Justice Fellowship Program combining leadership development, human rights education and campaigning skills. The Fellowship is now in its second year on the theme of ending gender-based violence together. Last year’s Fellowship was on racial equality and inclusion. We will announce the 2020 Fellowship theme on Human Rights Day on 10 December 2019.

Purpose and role

Resolve is looking for a full-time Media & Communications Officer to join our growing and collaborative team, supporting our fellows to get media coverage to make their voices heard in society and communicating to a wide array of audiences the value of Resolve’s fellowship model. You understand the power of traditional and new forms of media to raise awareness on human rights, social justice and inclusion, when harnessed positively as a force for good. You are someone who has direct experience working with the press and are also a digital native.

 

Above all, you are a great storyteller, who loves to support grassroots people in the community to tell their story in an empowering way, with clarity, confidence, care and conviction. You are able to think of thoughtful and strategic ways to translate complex social justice concepts into relatable multimedia story content and have a knack for identifying and seizing reactive opportunities in the news cycle. This is a chance to be part of an up-and-coming NGO where you can leave a legacy, build the media capacity of emerging leaders and apply your communications skills to building a more tolerant society for all.

 

Responsibilities

  • Build working relationships with the media (print/broadcast/online) and pitch compelling content to secure more online / offline media presence for Resolve’s fellows and team and assist in handling media enquiries in a professional, timely and effective manner.
  • Support in liaising with fellows on media and communications opportunities, helping them to develop their talking points, build their media capacity, and briefing them in advance so they feel comfortable and confident to share their stories and key messages.
  • Keep abreast of the news cycle, relevant developments, looking for new and different angles to engage, developing Resolve’s position, and where necessary, supporting crisis media work, and ensuring Resolve responds in an effective and timely manner to key trends.
  • Brainstorm creative ways to build up our community of online supporters and followers and create a mobilized and engaged audience on our fellows’ stories, the issues that Resolve highlights in its fellowship, and the initiatives of our group of past and present fellows.
  • Assist, where needed, to prepare and translate quality communications materials for Resolve’s Social Justice Fellowship Program, for example, theme statements, fellow recruitment promotion and alumni network, to recruit high-quality fellows and mentors and attract donors and partners.
  • Handle administrative, tracking and evaluation work related to media and communications, including creating coverage reports, running analytics, monitoring media impressions and capturing clippings, and improving Resolve’s backend communications infrastructure.
  • Assist and participate in overall team function activities, such as quarterly retreats, work-planning, staff meetings, team-building and Resolve event functions; and, where appropriate, represent Resolve externally at external engagements and media work.

The position will report to the Head of Marketing and Fundraising.

 

Qualifications and Skills

  • Previous media experience and good connections and ability to network with journalists.
  • Superior writing skills (Chinese and English) and creativity.
  • Exercises good discretion and sound judgment to mitigate risk.
  • Diploma in a related field, such as journalism or communication.
  • At least 2 years’ working experience in related field.
  • Exceptional digital fluency, including Microsoft Office and Google-based platforms. 
  • Strong knowledge in SEO, email marketing and social media.
  • Experience in photography, graphic design and video editing welcome.
  • Strong interest in participatory processes and human rights-based approach.
  • Permission to work in Hong Kong.

Salary & Benefits 

HKD 20,000 - 25,000 a month, depending on the level of experience of the candidate. The position is designed to be full-time although flexible options can be considered for someone who is a very seasoned professional. Other benefits including some options for remote working, professional development opportunities, health and dental insurance and above-market levels of holidays.
