Advances in digitalization, data and advance analytics are changing industries at pace with the pharma industry showing signs of movement

The Digital Health Market will grow exponentially over the next 3 years, with new applications in digital showing in phase 3 studies significant benefits for patients including overall survival in Cancer

AstraZeneca would like to leap frog in this area and has prioritized digital in R&D as a critical strategic area of focus by 2025, as part of the overall company strategy.

Digital Health R&D’s ambition is to transform healthcare, powered by digital, science and collaborations,
to deliver the healthcare outcomes and experience that patients care about the most.

The Digital Health R&D journey incorporates 3 key stages:

  • Stage 1 – foundational, reimagine how we work, by maximizing the use of digital, data and analytics transform processes within R&D to gain significant benefits on speed of the portfolio (goal 9 months acceleration) productivity (goal -20% reduction in cost per patient per year) quality at source, patient experience and probability of success.
  • Stage 2 – advanced, redefine clinical trials and digital health to improve overall patient experiences and outcomes, example redefining patient populations, remote clinical trials, patient apps to reduce/manage adverse events and improve patient outcomes (OS), using data from EHMr and RWE instead of control arms, and through PROs and continuous patient monitoring, creating new end points enabling studies in earlier stages of disease (ctDNA changes) prolonging significantly patients’ lives
  • Stage 3 – future-readiness, reimagine healthcare, examples, AZ as a healthcare provider beyond medicines for certain indications (example: Breast Cancer, proving monitoring, predictive analytics and therapies for improved outcomes)

The Business Agility Office (BAO) is an integrated, objective team, uniquely positioned to oversee the planning, governance and performance of Digital Health R&D

Reporting to the Delivery & Operations Performance Director, the Performance Manager will develop and evaluate a comprehensive set of strategic management and measurement processes, tools and visualisations that links strategic objectives to key performance indicators for the functional area and provide accurate performance management reporting to Digital Health R&D

Accountabilities:

  • Works with Digital Health R&D teams to coordinate value delivery across workstreams, both on planning and execution, as well as supporting prioritisation on delivery based on business value
  • Works with Digital Health R&D teams to facilitate and establish the adherence to the governance and processes (including selection and utilisation of tools i.e., MS Teams, Miro, JIRA) within Digital Health R&D. Coordinate activities across groups and refresh as appropriate to continue to provide best practices
  • Create and design a readily accessible and easily digestible dashboards for KPI and governance measures, evaluate metrics and outputs and report on business performance and trends so that Digital Health R&D leadership understand business performance against key indicators
  • Coordinates life cycle management and business continuity for Digital Health R&D processes, systems/tools, standards, procedural documentation and training materials. Creates the design of the progress reporting of the Digital Health R&D functional capability build and completes first round of analysis
  • Works across Digital Health R&D teams to help actively manage the risks, issues and dependencies including tracking delivery of agreed mitigations and trigger dates
  • Supports the creation of an effective demand and capacity management approach and tracking process
  • Coaches Project Support Officers and Analysts on Digital Health R&D best practices
  • Creates artefacts for steering committees, councils and senior governance forums
  • Works across Digital Health R&D teams to provide consistent quality of inputs (with regular updates) into long range plans conforming to function/overall group growth objectives.
  • Works with AZ partners such as QA, ITQM, SEUIT PMO, IAS and Compliance to improve the quality, compliance, cost or speed of projects across Digital Health R&D

Education, Qualifications, Skills and Experience required:

Essential:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in appropriate discipline
  • 3+ years of progressive experience in performance management or portfolio management
  • Experience of applying and analysing Benefits and Value Management techniques in a Business performance context
  • Superb skills using the suite of Microsoft Office products
  • Excellent relationship building and communication skills, with strong customer focus
  • Ability to interpret and communicate technical information into business language
  • Continuous Improvement mindset with ability to improve existing analysis and processes
  • Experience of working in change / transformation projects in a global complex organisation and the role that appropriate levels of governance has
  • Integrity and trust -- unwavering commitment to "doing the right thing"

Desirable:

  • Significant experience of working in an Agile portfolio/ programme environment and tracking of associated pertinent performance metrics
  • Pharmaceutical industry experience
  • Demonstrated knowledge of business management areas (finance, manpower, portfolio, supplier)
  • Working knowledge of BI tools (e.g. QlikView, PowerBI, Lumira)
  • Working knowledge of Analysis tools (e.g. R, Predictive Workbench, Python)
  • Experience of automating data capture and reporting e.g. moving from spreadsheets into more graphic visualizations/dashboards
  • Experience with benchmarking/scorecards
