How will you make an impact?

The R&D Director leads the shared instrument R&D organization in Vantaa for the Clinical Diagnostics businesses and is responsible for the Analyzers & Automation Business Unit’s R&D initiatives. This is a key role to further develop our Vantaa Center of Excellence for advanced instrumentation and to lead the future product development and renewal programs for clinical chemistry, industrial diagnostics and clinical mass spectrometry. This role provides visionary leadership and manages the instrument R&D activity to develop high-value products and improve the current product offering as determined by the division and business unit strategy.

What will you do?

  • Lead the instrument product development activities from concept through clinical studies, regulatory clearance and commercialization, using the Thermo Fisher Scientific stage-gate product development process.
  • Translate business unit strategy into actionable R&D plans and manage the instrument product portfolio to best meet strategic priorities.
  • Liaise closely with Marketing, Product Life Cycle Management, Assay R&D, Program and Project Management, QARA and Operations to plan and implement timely development and introduction of new high-quality products.
  • Drive the implementation of product changes to optimize product performance, quality and reliability, production efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Ensure quality systems and product development processes are effectively maintained and in compliance with internal and external quality and regulatory requirements (GMP/FDA/ISO-13485/CE-IVD).
  • Develop and maintain a climate of creativity, initiative and innovation in the instrument R&D teams.
  • Participate in Clinical Diagnostics Division R&D Council and co-operate with Global Chief Scientist Office to contribute to Thermo Fisher’s global R&D future vision.
  • Collaborate with other R&D teams in Thermo Fisher and with external partners and customers to drive benchmarking of processes, transfer of technology and generation of new product ideas.
  • Drive continuous improvement and adoption of best practices across within R&D function and across the business unit.
  • Develop and manage R&D budgets and staffing requirements consistent with business objectives; assure maximum utilization and efficiency of all resources.
  • Track technological advances in analyzers and automation products in order to prepare a vision for future product portfolio.

How will you get here?

  • Extensive experience in research and development, preferably in diagnostic instruments / platform development and in international, inter-disciplinary environment. At least 5 years in a leadership role
  • Experience in a role involving formal verification, design transfer and EU/US regulatory clearance of In Vitro Diagnostic devices.
  • Proven track record for effectively driving large scale development initiatives and working effectively in highly matrixed, global organizations
  • Strong business acumen and demonstrated leadership qualities, reflecting Thermo Fisher values, i.e., innovation, integrity, involvement and intensity
  • Demonstrated skills in project management and a track record of driving execution and creating high performance working environment
  • Strong interpersonal skills; able to interface & influence effectively
  • Ability to lead product development activities in a manner that develops individuals and promotes teamwork
  • Effective, articulate and concise communication - written, verbal and presentation skills. Ability to communicate effectively and comfortably with all organizational levels
  • English language fluent, Finnish an advantage.

Education/Qualifications:

Advanced degree in Engineering, Chemistry, Biochemistry or related field
