AstraZeneca is seeking a Head of Experience Design who can walk in on day one and make a difference. This role will report to the VP Digital Health Officer and develop & lead a world class design capability focused on our digital health efforts to ensure that AZ is the leading digital organization in the industry. This is leadership position that will contribute to the overall strategic direction of the function as well as the core value stream outcomes across the entire portfolio for all therapy areas, globally.

This person is recognized as a thought leader and expert in Design Thinking and has proven experience building an effective design capability in a large enterprise. This person’s key responsibilities are the following:

  • Partners with Digital Health Transformation Leaders to help define & develop strategy for all value streams (internal & external) across all therapy areas, from early to late stage clinical development to achieve the goals of the Digital Health R&D
  • Accountable for the design & patient experience for all Therapy Areas across R&D digital, as prioritised with the therapeutic area leadership in early and late, and in coordination with the transformation leads
  • Leads the delivery of innovations, translating vision into testable & feasible designs to ensure that we’re building products that enable us to achieve our strategy
  • Implements proven and novel discovery and design methods to ensure deep understanding and empathy for patients across the entire function that lead to improved healthcare outcomes.
  • Leads designers working on the design of Study Design & Planning solutions that are focused on improving quality, cost, speed, and increases the likelihood of regulatory success
  • Ensures the Study Design & Planning products are connected with advances in the patient tools to lead to more virtual visits, better evidence collection, and improved patient experiences 
  • Leads the design of tools that improves how teams deliver clinical trials – moving from antiquated, ad-hoc methods to modern tools that accelerate the predictable delivery of the entire portfolio and enables the entire organization to better understand the state & health of the portfolio.
  • Ensures we deliver world class, engaging design in the highly complicated context of Medicine Development, dealing with the constraints of Regulatory, Quality, GxP, SaMD, etc.
  • Develops and runs a robust & effective design process to ensure teams are hypothesis led and evidence driven
  • Develops and owns a Design System that ensures consistent designs and improves the velocity of both design & development
  • This person will manage a team of three employees currently with a growth potential of 10-15 people, a mix of employees and consultants

Required Skills:

  • High School degree or equivalent
  • 10 plus years of experience in Design with at least 5 plus years building & leading design teams.
  • Ability to get beneath the surface of what people say they want to truly understand what they need.
  • Exceptional communication skills, connections, has a high degree of intellectual curiosity, and can lead disparate teams to come up with novel / breakthrough methods for achieving ideal outcomes
  • In depth understanding & expertise including the ability to gather relevant data and information
  • Proven leadership ability promoting, motivating and empowering others to accomplish individual, team and organizational objectives

Desired Skills:

  • Bachelor's degree in Cognitive Psychology, Anthropology, Graphic Design, Fine Arts, Liberal Arts or related field
  • Healthcare or Pharmaceutical knowledge is highly desirable
  • Advance degree in Cognitive Psychology, Anthropology, Graphic Design, Fine Arts, Liberal Arts or related field. 
  • In depth experience building global digital products and understands the nuances of developing culturally customized solutions.

This role can sit at our Gaithersburg, MD; New York, NY; Waltham, MA; Gothenburg, Sweden, or our Cambridge, UK facility
