Day-to-Day Responsibilities

  • Lead a technical team to develop and deploy state of the art measurement and automated inspection technologies to support manufacturing activities including new technology transfer, process improvement, cost reduction and capacity expansion.
  • Initiate and lead measurement and automated inspection projects as appropriate to support competency and capability development critical to advancing operational competitive advantage, quality and capacity.
  • Represent team to engage with internal customers such as engineering and manufacturing and external vendors, industry and academia for technical engagement, capability evaluations and etcetera across Asia.
  • Advance and maintain technical competencies by actively participating and leading the evaluation of industrialized measurement solutions and the invention of automated inspection, including choosing/evaluating or developing framework and/or platforms of measurements / inspection systems, defining standard development tools and platforms (e.g. C#/C++, Matlab, Halcon & etc.), setting up division standard for measurement systems and automated and integrated inspection solutions.
  • Be responsible for establishing trainings and development programs/processes to enhance team’s competencies, capabilities and skills in core technologies through project assignments, trainings, coaching, seminars and conferences.
  • Project work implementing new measurement equipment. 
  • Conduct MSA and Gage R&R studies
  • Ensure validity of measurement equipment and programs
  • Provide technical direction to the measurement operators
  • Review measurement requirements and methods with our supply base
  • Hands-on on involvement with the design, development, and implementation of measurement equipment and techniques that support manufacturing and product development
  • Provide technical leadership and coordination with team members and equipment suppliers with system builds and factory installations
  • Identify and resolve gaps between attribute and technology roadmaps and existing measurement capability
  • Engineer measurement solutions that are suitable for use in manufacturing.
  • Work with a variety of cross functional groups (Development, Quality, IT, Purchasing, Operations); Work with scientists, researchers, and/or suppliers to understand first principles of systems and processes and develop improvements or enhancements to meet business needs
  • Use statistical tools and designed experiments (DOE) in process problem solving and process improvement
  • Support new product introductions through equipment design, installation, process certification, documentation and training.
  • Meet with internal project sponsors and stakeholders to develop system requirements, establish design constraints, and set priorities
  • Lead brainstorming and other ideation activities related to system engineering and measurement technologies
  • Develop fundamental understanding for new mechanical, electrical, and measurement system approaches using the public domain, modeling and CAD tool
  • Design and execute experiments to evaluate novel measurement technologies based on optical, electrical, and other contrast mechanisms
  • Design and build instrumentation as proof-of-concept prototypes to address inspection challenges
  • Act as technical Subject Matter Expert in cross-functional team dedicated to developing novel instrumentation
  • Communicate test results and project progress to team members, stakeholders, and leadership
  • Integrate new systems and new technologies into development and manufacturing lines
  • Transfer new technologies to equipment and process receivers. Provide remote system support, and develop system documentation
  • Understand Corning's Intellectual property management processes and follow that process in documenting any intellectual property developed as part of a project.  This includes capturing intellectual property in the form of invention disclosures, technical reports, patent applications and etc.
  • Provide day-to-day problem-solving support to production, development and research operations as necessary

Education & Experience  

  • MS or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Computer Science, Mechanical, Opto-electrical or relevant field.
  • 5+ years of relevant professional experience, ideally in a manufacturing or development setting with a track record for delivering results
  • Demonstrated knowledge in a technical field
  • Project team membership, contributor and/or leadership experience
  • Top Universities in the US, North America, Europe & Asia is a plus
  • Experience working on process control / online measurement & inspection / electrical equipment for glass melting, forming, finishing and/or automotive subcomponent manufacturing plant is a plus
  • Exposure to APQP, PPAP, IATF 16949 or Automotive Safety Testing a plus
  • Experience living, studying, working and/or extended traveling outside of home country or dealing with foreigners is a plus
  • Extensive working experience in multi-national corporations is a plus
  • Diversity of experience or background is an asset

Required Skills 

  • Strong technical expertise in Optics, Machine Vision, Electrical Engineering, or Systems Engineering
  • Measurement system development or characterization
  • Optical system design
  • Solid understanding of statistical methods / analysis of systems
  • Data retrieval, plotting and analysis (primarily using Microsoft Excel)
  • Strong process, systems and troubleshooting skills
  • Understanding of measurement technology and testing methods
  • Expertise with Halcon, MIL or other Machine Vision / Image Signal Processing toolset
  • Expertise with broad range of optical and non-optical-based sensors and technologies (including cameras, laser sensors, ultrasonics, vibrometers, and interferometers)
  • Hands on experience with equipment installation
  • Experience working with outside suppliers and machine integrators.
  • Ability to manage, prioritize, and execute multiple projects simultaneously
  • Strong programming capability in either VB.Net or C# programming languages
  • Expertise with LabView, Simulink, MatLab, or other system prototyping and data analysis software
  • Ability to communicate effectively to a diverse technical and non-technical audience, including native English speakers and English-as-a-Second-Language speakers.
  • Broad-based communication skills to interact with customers in all components of the business and at all levels of the organization.
  • Ability to work effectively in a small team in a cooperative, flexible, and respectful manner; communicating constructively, showing commitment and working toward a common goal.
  • Broad-based vision and strategic thinking to work with businesses across the country and lead measurements and automated inspection technology strategic execution
  • Strong ability to manage change and multiple priorities dealing with a mixture of Center-of-Excellence (COE) capability development, project activities and Community-of-Practice (COP) collaboration.
  • Prior engineering experience with technical/project leadership responsibility for the design, development, and deployment of measurement systems and/or automated inspection systems/platforms for manufacturing environment.
  • Experience in manufacturing information systems with process data collection
  • Experience in controls, shop floor and factory network systems architecture design for data integrity and reliability
