The NoSQL Database Cloud Service is a fully managed OCI Native service that runs in Oracle's blazingly fast, stunningly advanced Gen 2 cloud.
Our service is deployed in more than 23 commercial regions worldwide and boasts 7x24x365 availability (we don't have maintenance windows -- we're that good).
Underneath the hood is an industry leading, horizontally scalable, shared nothing, distributed database (Oracle NoSQL Database). We're adding DevOps personnel, both engineers and/or a manager, to the team.
DevOps can mean different things to different people so let's explain how we see it. In its most strict interpretation, DevOps means that the Developers also run and maintain the service. That's us: our culture is that everyone is hands on, even our managers. We're all in the "on-call" rotation, but don't worry, it's not as bad as it sounds. We divide DevOps into three main areas:
(1) Development: Java development, Database development, Cloud Service development. It's a pretty broad spectrum for a candidate to fill, but we like to see some sort of development experience, preferably, but not necessarily, with a cloud service.
(2) CI/CD experience: Knowledge of CICD pipelines, tools, practices, etc. Hopefully, not just knowledge but actual CI/CD deployment experience and/or evangelism. Docker, Docker swarm, Kubernetes, deployment methodology and practices. Ansible, terraform, git, scripting, python. Again, preferably, but not necessarily, in a cloud environment.
(3) Operations/SRE experience: Actual operations experience with a cloud service. Ansible, terraform, monitoring tools, grafana, python, scripting (e.g. bash).
If you have experience in this area, hopefully you also have experience improving these areas with automation (SRE). Ideally you have experience in all three of these areas, but there aren't many like that.
But maybe you have one or two of the three and really want to learn about what DevOps really means and get experience in all three. If so, let's talk. For instance, maybe you've done Development and some CI/CD but the operations piece was left to the operations people in your group. That's ok. You can learn the operations piece. Or maybe you've done the operations work and you want to move further towards the CI/CD and Development. That's ok.
We can move you there. Maybe you're an individual contributor with aspirations for leading a group as a technical lead. Let's talk. We want to build the group with people all around the world and we need strong technical leaders who know about distributed systems, have deep experience in troubleshooting networking and OS issues, can do Root Cause Analyses, and identify new metrics for monitoring. What's that you say? You have experience in cloud infrastructure? Even better.
Maybe you're a manager, the hands on type, and you want to take on a bigger challenge, maybe working with a distributed group all around the world. Maybe you want the prospect of moving further down the stack into database kernel work. Let's talk.
One final requirement: you should have strong written and verbal communications skills. This is something that is hard to teach so we really want you to bring this to the party right up front. If you bring the right energy, motivation, and skills to the table, we'll help shape the job to you.
