Job Description
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Supervise and assist steward’s helpers and night cleaners
- Lead, teach, coach and inspire a team of up to 40 staff including stewarding attendants, pot washers, night cleaners, garbage and recycling attendants
- Ensure all stewarding colleagues arrive for their scheduled shift punctually and in clean and correct uniform, following up on any report of tardiness or failure to sign in or out
- Assist the stewarding management team in the leadership of the stewarding department including participation in training, scheduling and coaching
- Conduct a daily line-up with all colleagues to pass on events and information
- Review all kitchen and banquet set-ups and ensure that they are completed accurately and on time
- Communicate performance concerns with stewarding colleagues, to the chief steward or sous chef
- Ensure that you complete all duties associated with your assigned area of responsibility
- Strive to uphold all hygiene and sanitation regulations, ensuring that all equipment in the kitchens and dishwashing areas are clean and in good working order, and report any deficiencies
- Maintain Inventory of chemicals and cleaning supplies
- Assist in the kitchen with plating meals
- Ensure cleanliness and maintain inventory of cutlery, china and glassware for all hotel outlets
- Enforce a safe work environment for all colleagues and guests by upholding the safety rules provided by the Fairmont Empress and the stewarding department
- Ensure any accident within the stewarding department, no matter how small, is documented in an incident report and forwarded to chief steward to hand in to Talent & Culture before the 72-hour deadline
- Foster an environment of cooperation within the department and between other departments within the hotel, encouraging participation and input from all colleagues, while promoting professional work habits that will ensure that the department is being guided at all times by Fairmont’s mission, vision and values
QUALIFICATIONS
- A minimum of two years recent (in the last five years) experience as a Steward’s Helper or Night cleaner or Dishwasher or 6 months recent experience (in the last five years) as a supervisor in a stewarding department of a hotel or equivalent supervisory experience
- High School diploma or equivalent
- Completely fluent English language skills; both written and verbal
- A team player with proven success in relationship building
- Excellent organizational skills and show initiative with ability to work well with little supervision
- Knowledge of safe working procedures for hazardous materials
- Demonstrated a high level of responsibility and commitment
- Demonstrated commitment to provide excellent service and exceed guests' expectations
- GHS/WHMIS Training is considered an asset
- Computer Skills, including a good knowledge of Word, Excel, email communication are an asset
- Physical ability to perform the requirements of the job, including:
- Constant standing and walking throughout shift
- Frequent lifting and carrying up to 50 lbs
- Occasional kneeling, pushing, pulling
- Occasional ascending or descending ladders, stairs and ramps
