Job Description

Position Purpose:

The Shipping Manager is responsible for the direct oversight of the Shipping Department to include managing personnel issues for a medium size work group.

This role will have a dual reporting structure reporting to the LSG Regional Distribution Leader and the Site Director of Operations This role is expected to make independent decisions to ensure operations continue to run effectively and safely. This position is responsible for all warehouses and their functions.

Job Responsibilities:

  • To establish a strong cultural environment; this includes team building and improvement programs to create a distribution framework that will assure world class customer service. Insure that this culture promotes safety, productivity and teamwork at all levels of the operation.
  • Assist in the interviewing, hiring, and training of warehouse employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; provide feedback and assist in appraising employee performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
  • Direct and co-ordinate the activity of employees verbally and through written performance plans.
  • Organize and manage day-to-day operation and supervision of operations personnel to ensure accurate and on-time order fulfillment.
  • Provide and support a safe work environment and safe work practices through the delivery and reinforcement of various safety programs and continuous improvement of operating methods and processes.
  • Institute policies to maintain clean, neat, and organized facilities using 5s and lean manufacturing methodology.
  • Responsible for ensuring the direction, coordination, and evaluation of warehouse resources. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.
  • Reinforce and drive communicating business and departmental objectives and results on a continuous basis.
  • Responsible for ensuring associates are trained and certified in DOT and IATA regulations for moving goods by air, rail, sea and road.

  • Provide and facilitate training of associates to maintain OSHA, ISO, and internal requirements.
  • Assist in the identification and implementation of continuous improvement opportunities and customer satisfaction opportunities for the department.
  • Evaluate and manage equipment, systems, and facility to improve efficiencies and work flow.
  • Develop and recommend plans for resource utilization.
  • Facilitate strong working rapport between warehouse team, production department, Customer Service, Sales, and the Customer.
  • Ensure that only quality material is being shipped to the customer by working closely with QA and QC.
  • Other duties as assigned by the LSG Distribution leader and Site Director.

Quality Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for managing departmental programs in accordance with Quality System procedures.
  • Updates and develops department specific procedures and work instructions, as necessary to ensure conformance with ISO 9001.
  • Responsible for departmental audit readiness and for participating in internal and external quality audits.
  • Responsible for root cause identification and development of corrective and preventative actions.
  • Ensures staff is properly trained to comply with Thermo Fisher Quality System policies and practices.
  • Monitors staff activities to ensure conformance with all internal policies and procedures.

Environmental, Health & Safety Responsibilities:

  • Manages staff in full compliance with all appropriate EH&S policies and procedures.
  • Responsible for departmental audit readiness and for participating in audits with internal Company groups, regulatory agencies, and customers.
  • Ensures staff acts in accordance with EH&S policies, practices and procedures. Addresses staff issues accordingly if there are EH&S violations.
  • Actively participates in root cause investigations on near misses and all incidents. Once identified, ensures corrective actions take place and compliance with Company policies and procedures, and all state and federal regulations occurs within the responsible department.
  • Ensures staff acts in accordance with state and federal regulations, including but not limited to EPA, DEP, and OSHA, etc.
  • Implements, applies and places emphasis on EH&S concepts with department specific responsibilities.
  • Demonstrated technical and procedural expertise and self-assuredness in applying EH&S policies and procedures.
  • Support the Company’s commitment for environmental health & safety by applying ISO 14001.

Essential Skills and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree.
  • 3-5 years’ experience in warehouse management and operations.
  • Familiarity with DOT and IATA regulations or knowledge of the methods for moving goods by air, rail, sea and road.
  • Sound understanding of distribution operations.
  • Demonstrated excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must possess strong leadership and management skills.
  • Demonstrated organizational and prioritization skills.
  • Ability to construct and carry out plans within given timetables.
  • Strong analytical skills with an ability to identify problems, trends, develop solutions and implement a course of action.
  • Strong attention to detail and possess the quality of being precise.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to motivate and persuade others to effect change is especially important.
  • Strong computer skills are essential.

Skills/Experience Valued but not Required:

  • Chemical warehouse management preferred.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

  • This position may require some heavy lifting (up to 50 lbs., heavier weights with assistance). Must be able to work an 8 - 12 hour shift while standing with periodic walking. Must be able to handle chemicals in a safe manner while donning appropriate personal protective equipment.
  • Required to wear ASTM F 2413-05 (or ANSI Z41-1999) safety shoes while working in the warehouse.
