Our team at Oracle Labs Australia specialises in Secure Program Analysis and the development of techniques and tools to find vulnerabilities in highly complex production software.  A 3-month summer internship on use of machine learning to Detect Malware in Office and Browser-Based content is available at Oracle Labs in Brisbane.  If you are motivated to use your Python programming skills and knowledge of machine learning, this is the position for you!

Current malware detection heavily relies on signatures to detect known patterns of malware. While very efficient, malware signatures require significant manual effort to develop, are easy to evade, and quickly become obsolete. The goal of this internship is to explore how machine learning could be used instead to automatically learn patterns of malware. Specifically, you will build a pipeline that uses a mix of Oracle and open-source technologies to 1) extract features from benign and malicious Office and JavaScript files, 2) select and prepare features for machine learning, 3) perform experiments to determine the best combinations of features and learning approach for malware detection, and 4) deploy the chosen learning approach in a real-world setting.

You will deliver 1) a report detailing the experiments and results, 2) two classifiers, trained on benign and malicious Office and JavaScript files, and 3) an end-to-end tool that can receive new files as input, extract features, and use the trained classifiers to tag them as benign or malicious.

Required Criteria

- Be enrolled in an undergraduate or Masters degree in Computer Science or Software Engineering

- Have working knowledge of machine learning approaches (e.g. scikit-learn)

- Have working knowledge of Python

- Knowledge of SQL is a plus

- Eligibility to work in Australia without sponsorship.
