Performance Database Engineer (DBE)

 

As a Performance Database Engineer, you'll work in role to diagnose and resolve performance issues with slow SQL. You'll encounter a variety of exciting problems and find ways to take care of them rapidly and efficiently. You should be familiar with Oracle SQL tuning, database waits classes and wait events, and performance views and reports such as ASH and AWR.

The core skill needed for this role is SQL tuning. Oracle Database internals knowledge and schema related experience are secondary, but occasionally valuable. You will be hands-on in your approach, often modifying SQL by hand and running test timings to see the results, then implementing hints or other changes to resolve problems.

You will have DBE partners in both USA and Australia to enable round-the-clock response coverage. When not working on SQL tuning and deeper database investigations, you may have opportunities to work on small to medium sized functionality improvements and database related projects. Every day is a little different, but every day is focused on improving SQL performance and improving the customer experience.

A positive desire to learn, listen, think, test, and fix problems daily is important to success. So is a desire to take care of the daily problems rapidly and independently. You need to be very capable with SQL, and good at finding metadata to track down a hunch or hypothesis. You should become comfortable with index access paths, joins, and response times. A knowledge of data structures and algorithms is helpful. The position can be Performance DBE or Senior Performance DBE, depending on expertise and experience.

 

Qualifications & Skills

 

• B.S. in computer engineering or equivalent work experience
• Knowledge of Oracle database internals
• At least 3 years hands-on experience in performance tuning, database development, software engineering, or database engineering; or directly related SQL tuning experience in other roles such as QA or SRE
• Proficiency in SQL and extensive experience with database guided applications
• Excellent communicator in both technical and non-technical contexts
• A passion for performance optimization work. You love to improve system scalability through hard-working iteration, intelligent testing, logically sound proof-of-concept work, and innovation
• A focus on designing for reliable and repeatable results, from the design stage through testing and into production
• An attitude passionate about the importance of testing to validate working designs, discovering new and better configurations, and generating data that guides decision making with demonstrations of value
• A desire to delight the customer by taking initiative, responsibility, and ownership of your projects
• SaaS, PaaS, IaaS, or ASP environment work experience

• Exadata and/or RAC experience.
• Agile/Scrum development experience.
• Enterprise business application development experience.
• Experience working on defining and refining requirements.
• Basic Linux proficiency.

Design, develop, troubleshoot and debug software programs for databases, applications, tools, networks etc.

As a member of the software engineering division, you will assist in defining and developing software for tasks associated with the developing, debugging or designing of software applications or operating systems. Provide technical leadership to other software developers. Specify, design and implement modest changes to existing software architecture to meet changing needs.

Duties and tasks are varied and complex needing independent judgment. Fully competent in own area of expertise. May have project lead role and or supervise lower level personnel. BS or MS degree or equivalent experience relevant to functional area. 4 years of software engineering or related experience.
