Principal Networking/Linux Kernel Software engineer (infiniband/RoCe)

Job Description

Role\: Linux Network Software Principal engineer

Location\: Australia or New Zealand

Linux Group Description

Oracle's Linux team develops on and contributes to upstream Linux to support our Engineered Systems as well as Oracle's Cloud infrastructure.  Our team troubleshoots, patches and enhances the Linux kernel and promotes the adoption of Linux at Oracle and in the industry in general. Developers in this role are expected to be active contributors to upstream Linux.

Through our experience with Engineered Systems such as the flagship Exadata, we created an additional kernel option, the Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel. Supporting Engineered Systems as well as OCI required us to be more innovative and modern with the Linux kernel, and UEK is a Linux kernel which combines mainline Linux performance with enterprise stability. UEK has secured world record database benchmarks for Oracle and provides the fastest execution environment for Oracle products. This kernel is refreshed from upstream Linux every 18 months, ensuring that new features can be used by these products in a timely fashion.

Oracle Linux was created in 2006 to provide a Linux solution which was well-tested for enterprise products such as the Oracle Database, Middleware and applications, coupled with enterprise-level support.  Oracle has been an active contributor to Linux since 1998, shipping the first ever commercial database on Linux and contributing multiple filesystems and feature enhancements. Our core focus is developing open source products and improving the stability and performance of the OS. Most projects for our team are in C, python, and bash shell. Projects initiated or led by Oracle include core Linux components\: btrfs, the next generation Linux filesystem; OCFS2, a general purpose filesystem; t10 DIF, enforcing data integrity throughout the IO stack; and RDS, a reliable datagram socket replacement for UDP on Infiniband fabrics. A comprehensive listing of our open source contributions can be found on oss.oracle.com and oss.oracle.com/git.

Linux Kernel Sustaining Engineer - RDMA/Networking

Do you have experience with the internals of TCP/IP, and RDMA network protocols and can troubleshoot, diagnose and fix Network problems? Do you have experience in analyzing tcpdumps, packet tracing, reviewing vmcores, and socket level programming?

We're looking for a Linux Kernel Network developer who can help troubleshoot and fix the Linux network stack, both for Ethernet and for Infiniband applications. Strong knowledge of Linux kernel development practices and git are a bonus, but any experience with UNIX-type network stacks and with network device drivers would make for a strong candidate. This role will involve bug fixing and development for elements of the Linux Network stack, network device drivers, the OpenFabrics Infiniband stack, and RDS, the Reliable Datagram protocol.

The Oracle Linux Kernel Sustaining team works with device drivers and upper-layer protocols of the Openfabrics stack. Infiniband, RDMA, RoCE and RDS are key to the performance of Oracle's engineered systems, enabling the blazing fast performance of our flagship Exadata engineered system. You'll be working with cutting edge software and hardware in a creative and technology-driven team. Changes contributed by the engineer will then be merged to Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel as well as into Upstream kernel
