What do we do?
At Opower/Oracle Utilities, we have built the most robust and effective consumer behavioral demand response platform in the world. We help households earn electricity rebates during the summer, and help the environment by limiting the need for utilities to build and maintain inefficient power plants that service those peak summer electricity demands.
Our platform currently serves millions of customers and sends millions of personalized and targeted communications within strict time constraints. Our platform needs to continue to scale to serve even more customers and provide increased flexibility with the communications we send. These represent big challenges that will require critical thinking and innovative engineering.

Our big plans and the constantly changing business landscapes require our team to not just think as engineers, but to communicate and collaborate with business stakeholders throughout the organization.

Our stack is based heavily on Java, Spring, and MySQL. If you have experience with those technologies, that's a plus.
What's the Assessment Process?
Our goal for the assessment process is to mutually assess each other's fit and do away with the unnecessary burden and stress of traditional interviews. From our side, it comes down to seeing how you approach problems and provide solutions as an engineer, in a way that simulates the actual work you'll be doing for this job.
As a member of the software engineering division, you will perform detailed design based on provided high level design specifications. Assist in system planning, scheduling and implementation. Build enhancements (including new product features) and resolve bugs. Build and execute unit test and unit test plans. Review integration and regression test plans created by QA. Interact with QA and porting engineering about problems in the code.
Duties and tasks are standard with some variation; displays understanding of roles, processes and procedures. Performs moderately complex problem solving with assistance and guidance in understanding and applying company policies and processes. BS degree or equivalent experience relevant to functional area. 1 year of software engineering or related experience.

To that end, we're looking for someone that has the skills to write code in our stack and to think critically about our role in the business. Sometimes, that'll require digging deep into our existing codebases and libraries; sometimes, that means working with other parts of the organization to reason about our business goals and where our engineering work fits in. Our solutions are sometimes large-scale projects that require coordinated engineering efforts across the organization, and sometimes just a few lines of code (or, nothing at all).
